This excursion will take us out into the legendary Straits of Magellan to visit the amazing bird life on Magdalena Island. There are reportedly between 30,000 and 40,000 pairs of Magellanic penguins in this island.

This trip gets underway at the Tres Puentes terminal just north of Punta Arenas, where we board a fery to Magdalena Island. This  includes two hours of sailing on the wolr-famous Straits of Magellan, where we expect to encounter the magnificent black-browed albatross along with skuas, South American terns, cormorants, kelp gulls, and others in the skies around us. In the waters we should find the Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) and Commerson's dolphins (Cephalorhynchus commersonii). Magdalena Island is a protected area known as Monumento Natural Los Pinguinos of 97 hectares, which also includes the tiny Marta Island nearby.

After disembarking at Magdalena Island we will encounter not just a visual marvel but one involving a world of sounds and odors as well. The Magellanic penguins (up to about 40,000 pairs) build their nests on the island, and their number increase during the months of January and February after the chicks hatch. And this is in addition to the juveniles along the shore. Along the trail to the lighthouse there are hundreds of penguins burrows and we will have the opportunities to observe these flightless birds up close. The lighthouse is an attraction on its own since it is a national historical monument. It has its own small museum and a commnding view of the island and its surroundings. We will spend just about one hour on this island.

Fuerte Bulnes is a Chilean fort located by the Strait of Magellan, 62 km south of Punta Arenas. It was founded in 1843 on a rocky hill at Punta Santa Ana, under the command of President Manuel Bulnes Prieto.

The fort was built to further the president's colonization policies in Southern Chile and protect the Strait of Magellan. He directed construction to ward off claims by other nations. Chiloé's intendant (governor), Domingo Espiñeira Riesco, ordered construction of a schooner to sail to that location. He originally commissioned it in the president's name, but Bulnes had the ship renamed Goleta Ancud, for where it was built.

This plaza has been the heart of the city since the end of the 19th century. it features a numner of opportunities for buying souvenirs an handicrafts from the region. In the center of the plaza you will see an imposing statue of Ferdinand Magellan, while the buildings facing the plaza reflect the neoclassical style popular with the early magnates of the regional sheep industry. The tour continues to the Salesian Maggiorino Borgatello museum, one of the oldest in Chile. The exhibits include permanent collections related to local flora and fauna, colonial-era artefacts, Antarctica, the ethnography of the region, an important map collection, local industrial materials, and items from Salesian missions at Dawson Island and Río Grande (Tierra del Fuego).
